Mandatory Vehicle Beacon in Spain: Everything You Need to Know

If you drive in Spain, it is mandatory to have a certified emergency beacon in your vehicle. This rule is important for both residents and those planning to move to the Alicante area. Following it prevents fines and ensures your safety on the road.

What is an emergency beacon?

The emergency beacon or V16 beacon is a luminous device placed on the roof of your vehicle in case of breakdown or accident. Its main function is to alert other drivers that your vehicle is stopped, especially on roads with low visibility.

Which vehicles must have it?

Current Spanish regulations require that all motor vehicles —cars, motorcycles, trucks, and vans— have a certified emergency beacon. From 2026, the V16 luminous beacon will replace the traditional warning triangle, simplifying use and increasing safety.

Fines and penalties

Not having the mandatory beacon can result in fines of up to €200, as well as the obvious risk of accidents.

Where to buy a V16 beacon

You can purchase certified beacons at:

  • Workshops and car accessory stores in Spain

  • Large automotive stores: Norauto, Feu Vert, Aurgi

  • Reliable online shops with home delivery

Tip: Always check that the beacon is certified and that the batteries are charged before use.

Practical tips for using the beacon

  • Always place the beacon on the roof of the vehicle following the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Make sure it is visible from a distance, even in rain or low-light conditions.

  • Keep a spare beacon in the trunk for extra safety.

Following Spain’s mandatory beacon regulations allows you to drive safely and avoid fines.
